Hump Day | 12 March | Last Hump Day

hump day logo.jpg

Well, it is with some sadness that I reveal the list of beers will be trying this Wednesday night at Hump Day, and announce it will be the last Hump Day in the present format.

Hump Day grew out of the Back Alley Beer Tastings that I was running at Grand Central Hotel and they started at a time when there was next-to-no other craft beer bars in Brisbane or beer tasting events.

Since then, Brisbane's beer scene has exploded and is now awash with craft beer events. I have been looking at how I can keep the tastings at the forefront of the beer scene,  and am working on some ideas for a new format. Unfortunately these ideas probably won't be able to implemented at the current venue, Kerbside.

Kerbside has been a great venue for Hump Day and Ian, Lexie and the team have been enthusiastic supporters of Hump Day and it will be sad to leave, but time and beer roll on.

So, after nearly three years we will be having our last Hump Day tasting at Kerbside. I have chosen what (I think) is an amazing selection of classic Belgian beers to celebrate the last event. I hope you'll join me to toast a great venue and celebrate the last of the Humps.

We'll be enjoying five beers, plus the usual nibbles.

Details:

When: Wednesday, 12 March 2014 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Where: Kerbside
Price: $30

Beers:

Bockor Omer Traditional Blond
A top fermented beer with a secondary fermentation in the bottle, brewed according to an original recipe. It contains carefully selected ingredients, such as high-quality malted barley from the Loire region (France) and three varieties of aromatic hops. It is a full flavoured beer with a fruity aroma and a subtle bitterness.

Bockor Kriek Max
Kriek Max, a cherry infused beer, is made from a mixture of bottom-fermented and spontaneously fermented beer (also called foeder beer). The perfect combination of cherries, natural juices and aromas on the one hand and the basic beer on the other hand lends this kriek not only its excellent flavour, but also its pleasant smell.

Bockor VanderGhinste Oud Bruin
Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient West Flanders Brown beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "VanderGhinste Oud Bruin". The main ingredients of our Vanderghinste Oud Bruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer. Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak for 18 months results in this specific West Flanders Brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Corsendonk Pater Dubbel
Brewed with  Caramel, Pilsen and Munich barley malts, and Saaz, Kent and Hallertau hops. Beer authority Michael Jackson describes Corsendonk Abbey Brown Ale as "A strong, Burgundy-coloured ale in the style of the classic Trappist brews of Belgium. Has a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Matures greatly with age, becoming softer, smoother and deeper in palate. Ideally, should be stored for at least a year, and could mature for at least five."

Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor
Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor completes the taste pallet of our Carolus beers. “Hopsinjoor” derived from “Opsinjoor”, the typical character of Mechelen and also because of the use of 5 different kinds of hops. These hops are fractioned at a different time during the cooking process in order to conserve a maximum of aroma. Concerning the taste, the Ale has a gentle taste with a slightly bitter after taste. Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor was launched in 2008 on the Zythos Beer Festival and hit the mark: the visitors elected it as best beer, bringing Het Anker “The Consumer’s trophy Zythos Beer Festival 2008”.

Brewsvegas - Dego/Deco - Alliance Hotel

osattwmccf.jpg

Brewsvegas is just a few weeks away and there is an alarming number of sensational sounding events to tempt you. I am doing a couple of events that week, including one on a topic very close to my heart.

I am working with The Alliance to do an event we're calling Dego Deco...we're taking a degustation menu and deconstructing the flavours to pair with a selection of great beers. It's really a study of beer and food, flavours and matching. It's designed to be very fun and hands-on (mouths-on?).

The Menu

STARTER 4 Oysters (different flavours)
MAIN Grass fed Beef sliced w blue cheese sauce or pepper sauce
DESSERT Affogato (ice cream, Frangelico, coffee)
...all paired (and blended) with a variety of craft beers

If you're looking at a great value, fun night in which we explore beer, food and flavour, join us on the 29th...

Where: Alliance Hotel
When: Thursday 27 March, from 7pm Upstairs
Price: $60

Hump Day | 26 February

cavalier-logo-full-transparent.jpg

The February Hump Day features a selection of beers from Cavalier Brewing Company. Based in Melbourne, Cavalier has kept a relatively low profile for a brewery making beers of exceptional quality. I rate Cavalier Brown Ale as one of the best of its type in Australia, and have never been disappointed with one of the beers I have tried.

At Hump Day we will be trying:

Cavalier Courage: A blonde ale created to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neuron Disease.
Cavalier Pale Ale: A classic American-style pale ale showcasing Nelson Sauvin, Mosaic and Citra hops.
Cavalier Brown: A rich but highly drinkable brown ale…a celebration of malt characters.
Cavalier Imperial Stout: Dessert in a bottle.

The monthly BeerMatt Hump Day beer tasting are a great way to try some of the latest craft beer imports, new local breweries and their beers. They are laid back and social with the emphasis on fun and are definitely not your average staid wine tasting.

We sample four or five new craft beers, learn a little about the breweries and the styles and then have some light nibbles and finger food. he best part is that if you don't want to play up on a school night, the tastings are usually over by 7.30.

The monthly Hump Day beer tasting is a great way to get over the midweek hump and expand your craft beer horizons.

When: Wednesday 26 February at 6pm (until 7.30pm)
Where: Kerbside, Constance Street, Fortitude Valley
Price: $30 +booking fee

BeerMatt masterclasses

This year I have started to run regular monthly Beer Masterclasses at The Alliance Hotel. These are a great fun class to host, and hopefully to attend. Over the course of two hours we go right through the brewing process, ingredients, styles and beer and food matching. The classes feature sampling ten beers over a wide range of styles, each highlighting a different ingredient or flavour profile.

Last class food blogger Damsel Martin came along and wrote this review on the Weekend Notes website. Check it out if you'd like to find out more about the classes.

If you would like to learn a little more about craft beer, food matching and how beer is made and where the flavour comes from, the Masterclasses are a great way to do that. You can see the calendar here, or if you have a friend that could use some beer schooling, gift vouchers are available too.

A new motto for consuming alcohol?

I had a great chat with ABC evening presenter Rebecca Levinston last night. We were nominally speaking about today's Fluid Festival at the Pig & Whistle, but after the alcohol and violence debate this week it was a little hard to start the chat talking about a beer festival...

Personally I feel sorry for the Government with this issue because everyone is looking to them for a solution and there’s pressure on them to do something, In politics, people want to see action and a quick fix. However, the real issue is our attitudes as a society to alcohol and drinking. Like smoking, that’s something that will take a long time to gradually change. I think it needs to be done, but there is just so much involved in doing that.

I guess my personal approach is to say drink less, and drink better, drink for flavour and not for effect. It's a message I have long brought out in my classes and tastings, and Rebecca seemed to like it too!

Hump Day | 29 January 2014

Timmermans Oude Gueze.jpg

The first Hump Day for 2014 will take place at Kerbside on 29th January.

If you haven’t been to a Hump Day, they are a great way to try some of the latest craft beer imports, new local breweries and their beers.

This month we will be trying some classic and some very special Belgians:

Timmerman’s Oude Gueze

A fabulous mix of lambics feeds this more than traditional version, in a limited production.  It is a blend of old lambic, which  has been aged for three years in wooden barrels, and young lambic which ensures spontaneous fermentation in the bottle. The different lambics are carefully selected by the brewer to obtain a perfect flavour. After it has been produced, Timmermans Oude  Gueuze,  is refermented for four months in the bottle, continues to improve for 20 years. Yes, this Grand Cru beer has a use by date of 2034….

Chimay Dorée (Gold)

To be honest, even though I love Chimay, I had never heard of this one. It’s 4.8% Golden Ale that has previously been reserved for the monks. They have recently decided to release a small amount once a year and the Queensland distributor has secured 15 cartons for the State. I have taken three of these…

Celis White

Celis white is a Belgian recipe witbier. It’s essentially the original Hoegaarden created by Pierre Celis. After he sold of the brewery, he founded a new brewery in Austin, Texas (USA) brewing the Belgian witbier according to the age-old recipe, and put it on the American market under the name Celis White. Brewery Van Steenberge gained the exclusive right to brew and distribute this beer and here it is. If you would like to know what Hoegaarden tasted like before ABInBev gutted it, this is your best chance…

Brugse Zot

From the only brewery in Bruges, Brugse Zot is a golden blond beer with a rich froth and a fruity flavour. I fell in love with this beer doing the brewery tour. Does it taste as good in Brisbane, or am I suffering from the Bintang Effect. You be the judge.

As always, tickets are limited

Bookings.

A very Humpy Christmas

So, Christmas descends upon us and we will celebrate our last Hump Day beer tasting with a selection of Christmas beers and beers for Christmas...

Christmas Beers

For too long beer and Christmas meant having a bitterly cold, barely flavoured beers, before moving onto red wine with the turkey. That's changing! There is a wide range of Christmas beers being brewed here and being imported that will really help get you into the Christmas spirit.

  • Rogue Santa's Private Reserve (Red Ale)
  • St Bernardus Christmas (Belgian Quad)
  • Brasserie du Bocq Triple Moine (Belgian Triple)

As a very special treat we will also be getting to sample a three year vintaged Redoak Christmas Ale I have been saving for just such a tasting!

As it's Christmas, we also have our annual celebration of baby Cheeses as well, care of some wonderful farmhouse cheese from Black Pearl Epicure, in addition to the regular nibbles.

Due to the limited supply of the vintaged beer, we will only have 40 tickets available for this special Hump Day.

When: 4 December 2013 5.30pm for 6pm start.
Where: Kerbside, Cnr Constance & Ann Street, Fortitude Valley

Hump Day | 20 November | Late Beaver!

Sorry for the delay with these beers, they have finally cleared customs and are in my hot little hands, ready for November Hump Day... BeavertownThere has been plenty of hype for UK craft brewers but you Hump Day crowds have seemed underwhelmed so far. Let’s see if we can raise the whelm-ometer with four beers from London’s Beavertown Brewery, founded by Logan Plant, the son of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.

We will be sampling four beers from its core range:

  • Gamma Ray (American Pale Ale)
  • 8 Ball (India Pale Ale)
  • Black Betty (Black IPA)
  • Smog Rocket (Smoked Porter)

Each of these beers rates in the high 90s on RateBeer.com (for those to whom that is a good indicator), but let’s let our own tastebuds be our guides…

As always, this will be a fun and laid-back tasting of good beers with great people with light nibbles and lucky door prizes…

Only 45 tickets available.

When: 20 November 2013 5.30pm for 6pm start. Where: Kerbside, Cnr Constance & Ann Street, Fortitude Valley Price: $30

Bookings.

PS. This is the first time I have used Eventbrite. It is a little more expensive for bookings, but has much better features. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Alliance Hotel tastings....

The Alliance Hotel in Spring Hill has been gradually developing itself as a venue for craft beer and great food. I have been really impressed with their approach, and not just because I have been working with them to develop their beer list. I don’t know of too many other pubs that would allow me to write tasting notes for their beers like this…

  • Budweiser 5% (AB InBev, US) We don’t understand why it’s called ‘premium’ just because its imported either. Light-flavoured and crisp but, unlike Fosters in Oz, at least they really do drink this in the US.
  • Corona 4.6% (Grupo Modelo, Mx) What can we say about the flavour of Corona, apart from here at The Alliance we use only the finest limes.
  • Sapporo (Sapporo, Coopers) Yes, it’s brewed in Australia, but so what? When it was ‘imported’ it came from Canada. Another crisp, easy-drinking lager. The can will stand out on your table.
  • Heineken (Heineken, Lion) Heineken talks more about the packaging than the beer, so why should we be any different? You know how it tastes, if you like it – go for it.
  • McLaren Vale ALE 4.5% (Mclaren Vale Beer Co, SA and contract) An Australian pale ale gently showcasing balance of malt, ale yeast and hop bitterness, with light Amarillo and Cascade aromas.
  • Two Birds Golden Ale 4.4% (contract) A delightfully balanced ale, with an emphasis on malt with aromatic hops. Offers a flavour dividend and complexity, while still leaving your palate intact.

It will be interesting to see if honesty has a future in beer menus and if it catches on elsewhere. Hey, I can dream, can’t I?

Anyway, I have been working with them to develop their beer list with Australian craft and will be gradually adding some imported craft beers as well. This is where you come in. I am going to host a monthly beer tasting to trial some of the beers I am considering. You get to have a say and see what you think and see whether they should be put on. As with all of my tastings, they will be laid-back and relaxed, with great beer and fun the emphasis.

The first tasting...

In the first tasting I am going to pit three beers in traditional styles from the US’s North Coast Brewing against three of the same style from the traditional breweries. You get to choose whether the imitator or the original is the best of the bunch.

We will see:

North Coast Le Merle (Super Saison) –vs–  Saison Dupont Bons Voeux North Coast Brother Thelonius (Belgian Abbey Ale) –vs– Brasserie Dupont Moinette Brune North Coast PranQster (Belgian Golden Ale) –vs– Duvel

I can’t think of a tasting I have been more excited about, with such legendary classics up against an exciting array of US craft imports…

Apart from the tastings there will be some finger foods from The Alliance’s kitchen and plenty of lucky door prizes.

Hope to see you there!

Where: The Alliance Hotel, Boundary Road, Spring Hill When: 9 October at 5.30 for 6pm start. Price: $39 all inclusive.

Queensland Beer Week events

Well, next week sees the second Queensland Beer Week roll into town. There is a stack of 'official' events, plus an active fringe festival has sprung up. The great thing is there is so much happening around good beer. There is no shortage of options to make the decision difficult, but if you're not already committed I have three events that I can recommend.

In a week that will see lots of great beer on offer, I have tried to pull together events that won't just offer good beer, but will be very entertaining as well.

Tuesday, 16 July. 7pm

BeerMatt vs Chuck Hahn

The 'versus' part of this dinner has been a little exaggerated. This is less about Chuck and I butting heads than conducting an experiment to see what people think of beers with brands and labels removed.

The evening  will feature three courses with two beers matched to each course, one chosen by Chuck and one by me, but you won't know what or which. Will you be able to pick the beers? Which one is better?

Included in the price is a beer on arrival and a very special mystery beer to finish. Plus lots of beer banter between Chuck and I.

If you've ever said, "I don't care who make the beer so long as it's good", this is an event not to be missed.

Where: The Alliance Hotel, Spring Hill Price: $69 Details and Bookings

Wednesday, 17 July. 6pm

The Brewin Transfer

If you liked the Gruen Transfer, join us as we dissect beer advertising in The Brewin' Transfer.

With a panel of heavy-hitters featuring Stone & Wood's Jamie Cook, Head of Craft at Lion - Brett Grebert and the ad man who  created the classic 'Charterboat? What charterboat?' ads for RACQ - Rem Bruijn, we will discuss classic beer ads while you drink beer and laugh.

Price includes entry, selection of beers on your table, cheese platter and light nibbles. The event is also timed to finish in time for the State of Origin decider, both for the sporting spectacle itself, and the flood of beer advertising that it contains.

Where: Kerbside, Fortitude Valley Price: $59 Bookings

Thursday, 18 July. 6pm

Beer & BBQ Masterclass

Excuse the pun, but Southern-style BBQ is so hot right now. Join us as tongmasters Pete Mitcham and Chris Luxton step you through dry-rubs and slow barbecue in this barbecue masterclass. We will show you how to prepare and slow barbecue brisket, plus learn better meat selection and grilling techniques for the traditional Australian barbecue and then we will feast on the spoils while enjoying some well-matched beers.

Food, fire and fun...with beer. Even better, come along for the barbecue class, then join the free Stone & Wood event that happens to be just outside in Ross Street afterwards. Two Good Beer Week events for the price of one!

Where: Golden Pig Cooking School, Newstead Price: $65 Bookings via The Golden Pig

Finally, if you haven't had your fill during the week, South Bank's fabulous Regional Flavours festival is being held in the Little Stanley Street over the weekend of 20/21 July. It features a pop-up beer garden called The Hunting Club in which I will be pairing great craft beer to such tasty comestibles as camel sliders, lemon myrtle-cured salmon and dessert lime crème brulee. Entry is free and the whole event is very family friendly.

Whichever events you are going to, enjoy great beer and I hope to join you for one.

Matt Kirkegaard

Where's the cheese Pete?

At risk of sounding like an ad  - it's not, though I have done some work in the past for Black Pearl, which is where they may have gotten this idea? Maybe, though their GM, aka Big Cheese, Peter Gross is a long-term beer and cheese man too. Anyway, this is a brilliant idea. Beer and cheese are one of my favourite things in the world and Black Pearl Epicure are pitching to bars and restaurants cheese packs designed to be matched with beers. I am trying to find out whether these are available as retail options too, though scanning the list, I know I have bought many of these cheeses in the retail shop so they should be. If you do want to play this at home, stop by their retail outlet, or some of Brisbane's finer delis.

If you are a bar or restaurant that likes the idea, get in touch with Black Pearl...then give me a call and I'll match them to your beer list (for a small fee, naturally!)

image

Traditionally it has been Cheese and Wine, but the Europeans have known the wonderful pairing of Beer and Cheese for centuries, whether it be the simple Ploughman’s lunch or the Swiss delight of dipping potato in cheese, it is a marriage made in heaven.

Black Pearl can help you and your customers experience that tradition again……
